Promoting balanced diets and healthy lifestyles

For the past 30 years, the sugar industry has collaborated with the Department of Health and other key government departments and stakeholders towards promoting balanced diets and healthy lifestyles. SASA’s Nutrition Department communicates science-based information on sugar and health through a number of programmes and projects. The department has been in existence for over 30 years and has had extensive reach countrywide in both rural and urban areas of South Africa. The following are the main components of the programmes run with the corresponding target audiences.

Health Workers and Professionals

  • Nutrition workshops on dietary management of people living with Diabetes, Hypertension, Obesity and HIV/AIDS
  • Enhancing nutritional knowledge at medical congresses, symposia and workshops
  • Nutrition education material for use by health professionals

Nursing Educators

Nutrition workshops and resources for nursing educators and learners on Nutrition in:
Non-Communicable Diseases, Maternal and Child Health and Immunity and Chronic Infectious Diseases (HIV/AIDS and TB).

Public

Public health partnerships for health awareness, promotion and prevention of non-communicable diseases.

School Educators

  • Nutrition workshops and resources for educators to enhance learning as part of life orientation in schools
  • Enhancing nutritional knowledge at medical congresses, symposia and workshops
  • Nutrition education as part of the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) and Eco-schools

Nutrition Research Grants

Support of scientific research projects designed to clarify nutrition issues that arise in the public domain.
