The Tshwane metro police (TMPD) has warned motorists of an expected traffic disruption in Arcadia due to a protest. Spokesperson Nonhlanhla Mgiba said members of the SA Sugar Association would march in the streets of Arcadia and Sunnyside on Tuesday.
“The marchers will gather from 08:00 at Pretoria Art Museum corner of Francis Baard and Wessels streets in Arcadia which is their gathering point and move to the Department of Trade and Industry from 10h00 at the corner of Meintjies and Park Street in Sunnyside,” she said. Mgiba said a lane in Francis Baard Street at the Pretoria Art Museum would be closed for use as parking for the 20 buses bringing protesters from KwaZulu-Natal.
“From (Pretoria) Art Museum the protesters will join Wessels Street, turn right into Park Street, then along Park Street past Bourke, Leyds, Cilliers, Troye and Greef streets,” Mgiba said.
The DA said the protesters wanted to vent their frustration with the Department of Trade and Industry for its failure to protect their jobs and future.
Mgiba said the marchers were expected to disperse at 14h00. “The Buses will pick them up at the corner of Park and Meintjies streets at the Department of Trade and Industry. One lane will be closed,” she said. Mgiba said TMPD officers would monitor the march and affected streets. “Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.”
