The once thriving South African sugar industry is currently incurring losses that are no longer sustainable.
The industry concentrated in the rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal and southern Mpumalanga has experienced a decline in annual sugar production by nearly 25% over the past 20 years. Left unchecked, it is likely that in time, significant operations at all levels will be forced to exit the industry.
